Dr. Burton's Post-Op Instructions for
Bilateral Myringotomy with Ventilation Tubes
- May use Tylenol® or Tempra® every 4 hours as needed for pain.
- DO NOT use Motrin®, Advil®, or ibuprofen products in the 5 days before surgery through the 5 days after surgery due to the increased risk of bleeding.
- DIET: Start with clear liquids such as Gatorade, apple juice, Popsicles, and Jell-O. Advance to a normal diet as tolerated.
- Use of the eardrops: 3 drops to each ear, 3 times a day for 3 days after the surgery. If your child complains of burning when the drops are administered, discontinue the use of the drops.
- Drainage (even if bloody) from the ear is normal for the first three days after surgery. If drainage occurs after the third post-op day, please call during office hours, and have your pharmacy phone number available. We will call in a stronger prescription eardrop for your child.
- Avoid getting water in the ears. Earplugs must be used with any water activity (swimming, bathing, shower, sprinkler). We offer custom molded earplugs, pre-formed earplugs (Doc's plugs), and headbands for water prevention at our office. Wax plugs are not recommended.
- Your child may resume all normal daily activities the day after surgery.
- Return for a postoperative visit 4-6 weeks after surgery. An audiogram (hearing test) will be performed after the first post-op visit depending on level of hearing loss present before surgery.
- Please call for any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child's status at (770) 953-1414.
